Last week we participated in an online incursion at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. We were shown artwork by Aboriginal artists, which had portraits of famous Aboriginal people, including Cathy Freeman, Adam Goodes, Jessica Mauboy and Senator Bonner. We drew self portraits inspired by David Caird’s portrait of Cathy Freeman, prior to her racing in the Sydney Olympics in 2000. We had to trace our face profile with our finger and then draw a side-on face profile. Refer to our artwork below. The Banksia class created portraits of their buddies inspired by Marcia Langton’s portrait.
We have learnt about significant Aboriginal people and how they keep the fire burning. We enjoyed improving our drawing skills by creating our self portraits. The theme for NAIDOC Week is ‘Keep the fire burning! Black, Loud and Proud.’ By Cooper, Archie, Reilly
